Why are some categories missing from the Earning and Spending widget?

This may be because the missing category has been set up as a transfer category or because the transactions themselves are marked as transfers.

Check the Earning and Spending widget's individual settings to see if transfers have been included here. Please see: Configuring individual widget settings

Why do my Transactions Column Widget totals not match my Earning and Spending or Sankey widget totals?

By default, the Transactions column widget shows the amounts earned and spent based on the positive or negative amounts of the transactions themselves, summed to show your total income and expense over a given period.

However, the total earned and spent amounts in the Earning and Spending widget and Sankey widget are based on the category totals - which take into account the category type applied to each category. This means that refunds or credit transactions within an Expense type category are deducted from the total spend rather than reported as income contributing to your overall income total.

Similarly, any debit transactions within an income category are deducted from the total earned within that category, rather than reported as part of your total spending.

For example, if you received a refund in your Groceries category (set up as an expense category), the refunded amount would be deducted from the total spend for the relevant period rather than reported as income in the

Earning and Spending widget.

For more on category types, see: Category types in PocketSmith

Aligning the widgets

If you'd prefer your widgets to show the same earned and spent amounts, you'll just need to edit the widget settings for the Transactions column widget, choosing the option to ‘Distinguish debit and credit transactions based on category type’.

Additionally, ensure that you have the same options selected across widgets for uncategorised and transfer transactions. Once these settings have been saved, your widgets should be aligned ✨.

Why is one of my expense categories showing as income (or vice versa)?

If one of your expense categories is showing in the income section of the Earning and Spending widget, it’s likely that the category type for this category has been set incorrectly.

To check, head to the Categories (Manage > Categories) page and edit the category type to be the best fit.

If the category type is the correct fit, it might be that the widget has had a greater sum of income transactions than expense transactions assigned to it, despite being an expense category, or vice versa. Click on the category segment to view the transactions included.

Why are some of my budgets not showing in the Budget widget?

This section of the Dashboard shows all of your budgets that have at least one transaction assigned to them during that budget's current budget period.

The period associated with each budget is dependent on the repeat frequency assigned when creating the budget. Hovering over a category's budget bar on the Budget page will show the period set for that particular budget and how many days are remaining.

Why isn't my budget showing in the Bill reminder widget?

If a budget that you'd expect to see in the Bill reminder widget is not showing, it may be that the category is not set up as a bill category. To learn about bill categories, including how to set a category as a bill category, please see: Bill and scheduled income categories

Why is my Bill reminder widget showing as overdue when I have already paid?

Please see: Bill reminders - paid bill showing as overdue

Why is certain data not showing?

Sometimes your data might appear missing, but it may just be that the widgets aren't configured to include the information you are looking for.

If you have already configured your widgets to show only selected categories or accounts, more recently added categories or accounts will not show by default. Check the individual widget settings to see if you need to add these!

Please see: Configuring individual widget settings

How can I compare or separate different data?

The customizable Dashboard is the perfect way to compare or separate different information you might be interested in focusing on. For example, you can compare last year's spending to this year's or separate personal finances from business or joint accounts by using separate Earning and spending widgets, configuring each to reflect the relevant date range, or relevant set of accounts.

For more information on this, please see: Comparing reports using the Earning and spending widget

You can also create saved reports on the Income & Expense Report (Reports > Income & Expense), which may be useful here!

Can I choose to view only certain account balances together?

To view select account balances together, for example, to separate your regular bank accounts from your investment or credit card accounts, you can create and customise multiple versions of the Accounts list widget to include only the relevant sets of accounts.

See Accounts list widget for more on using this widget.

Can I hide an account or specific category from a Dashboard widget?

To hide an account or category from a specific widget, you can check the individual widget configuration options.

For more information on this, please see: Configuring individual widget settings

Newly added Bank account not showing on Dashboard

If a bank account is newly added to your PocketSmith, any Dashboard widgets with ‘account filtering’ configured won’t include the newly added account. You’ll just need to edit the widget settings in order to include the account.

For details on editing widget settings, see: Configuring individual widget settings.

Note thay any widgets that have ‘All accounts’ configured will include the new account by default.

My Dashboard is only reporting expenses and not showing income

If you've noticed that one of your Dashboards is only reporting on expenses, you may have initially used the Control Spending Dashboard template, which focuses on expenses rather than income.

You’ll just need to edit individual widget settings to Show both earning and spending:

For details on configuring widgets see: Configuring individual widget settings

How can I view sub-categories instead of parent categories on the Earning & Spending widget (or vice versa)?

To report at the sub-category level on the Earning and Spending widget, untick the option to Roll up sub-categories into parent category under the widget’s settings:

If you'd prefer to see reporting at the parent category level, then just ensure the option to Roll up sub-categories into parent category is ticked instead ✅

See: Configuring individual widget settings for more details on editing widget settings.
