'Archive' old categories
You can tidy up and move unwanted categories out of view on the Budget page by utilising an 'archived' parent category and nesting your old categories within. Read on for all the details 🧹✨

Creating an 'Archived' category
To create an Archived category:
- Create the Archived parent category: Adding new categories from the Categories page.
- Move this Archived category to the bottom of the page.
Move any no longer used categories to be nested beneath: Sub-categories and nesting:

With this, you will retain the data, past budgets, or categorisation for these categories.
Tips for ensuring your archived categories are no longer active
Budget end dates
You will need to add budget end dates for any categories you wish to archive with an active budget. This will end the budget and ensure it's no longer included in your Budget summary.
To learn how to do this, see: Adding an end date for a budget
Category rules or Filters
You'll also need to delete any current Category rules or Filters for your archived categories to prevent future transactions from being assigned to these automatically.
For the steps, see: Editing & deleting category rules and Steps to delete a filter.
Caveats
Categorising transactions drop-down
Any archived categories will still appear in the drop-down list when categorising transactions, though they will be right down the bottom if you have the Archived parent category at the bottom of the Categories page.
Category names
Please note that all categories in PocketSmith must have unique names.
If you want to reuse any of the category names, for example, Rent, just edit the archived category name to include the word archive so it becomes Archived - Rent.
