Budget analysis panel overview

The budget analysis panel makes it easy to track the status of a budget.

This panel is available throughout PocketSmith wherever we perform budget analysis: the Calendar, Budget page, Trends page, the Dashboard’s budget widget, and the Income & Expense report.

This guide provides a walkthrough of key data from the budget analysis panel and explains where to find it.


Getting to know the sections of the budget analysis panel

Budget analysis period

The date range applied to the report, or the page you are accessing the budget analysis panel from, determines the analysis period.

Hover over the clock icon to see how many days are left of the current budget period:

Budget section

The budget figure shows the budget events included for the time frame you have chosen to view. For more information on the included budgets, click on the figure shown:

Actual section

The 'actual' figure shows your overall spend for the category within the budget timeframe you are viewing.

To view the included transactions, just click on the figure shown. You can also head to the Transactions page from here.

You will also see a breakdown of how much of this figure was within the budget, overspent or saved.

You can access the burndown chart or head to the Trends page from the budget analysis pop-up, no matter where you access it. Heading to these pages from the budget analysis panel will show you data specific to the budget analysis you are viewing.

Budget analysis period on the Budget page

If the Use total budget summary date range for budget amount analysis option is unticked the budget amount analysis will use each individual category’s current budget period.

If the Use total budget summary date range for budget amount analysis option is ticked the budget amount analysis will show data for the same timeframe.

The budget analysis panel of the Total Budget Summary bars provides a breakdown of how your budgets are tracking for all categories, with clear sections to describe the data shown.


Click into budget or actual figures for further information:

Click on a category to view the budget analysis panel for that category.

You can view the budget analysis panel of a parent category with the children categories rolled up. The budget analysis will include all child category budgets and transactions for the timeframe you are viewing.

Hover over a budget event on the Calendar to view the budget panel analysis for the particular budget event:


On the Trends page, you will find that the budget analysis panel is permanently open:

Hover over different time periods, and the panel will change the data shown automatically.


You can also use the arrows in the top right to jump through the timeframes:

To lock the panel to a time period, select the lock icon:

To view the budget analysis panel on the Income & Expense report, hover your mouse over the category and select the Show breakdown icon:

You can view the budget analysis panel on the Dashboard, which includes the budget widget.

The budget widget shows your budgets for the current budget period.

Below, you will see the Parking category is selected with the budget analysis panel showing the current budget period:
